Quality and experience determine a partnership

Hydraulics is needed in almost every machine in the peeling area and must tolerate huge loads and massive wear and tear, moist or even wet surroundings. Metsä Fibre’s Rauma pulp mill praises both the PMC solution’s applicability to a peeling process and its simplicity of use.
Metsä Fibre’s Rauma mill produces 650,000 tons of EFC bleached softwood pulp each year for the production of printing paper and specialty products. The annual wood consumption at full capacity is 3.4 million solid cubic meters, which is achieved with two peeling lines.

Higher utilization rate as the objective

“The modernization was necessary because the hydraulics of the peeling area, which were acquired 20 years ago, reached the end of the road, causing disruptions, errors and extra costs,” states Jari Kämäräinen, Regional Manager at Botnia Mill Service. “PMC provided us with a solution that promotes increased availability and enables us to respond to the mill’s capacity requirements. The goal of the modernization has been to boost capacity with 25%.”
“The new well-functioning equipment have spared us surprise downtimes, and we can carry out weekly maintenance work smoothly,” explains Mika Veteläsuo, Department Manager at Metsä Fibre. “Previously, even a minor maintenance operation could require hours of dismantling.”

Special solution for energy-efficiency

The customer stated a wish to improve energy-effi ciency by 20%. In PMC’s solution, energy-effi ciency is improved by decreasing the number of disruptions with a more effi cient control system. With the help of electronic automation and arrangement of sensors, the effi ciency of energy use can be remarkably improved.
“The arrangement of sensors has been our standard solution in other facilities, but this time we implemented it in a particularly harsh environment, where the trembling and the demanding nature of the surroundings pose a challenge for the sensitive electronic components,” says Risto Lehikoinen, Hydraulics Engineer at PMC Hydraulics.

Tested quality

PMC’s vast experience of delivering hydraulic systems for the pulp and paper industry is the foundation for creating successful solutions. The company has already decades of collaboration with Metsä Group’s other units. “We know the customer’s equipment and processes like the back of our hand. We always design the best solution for the customer’s process, and we make sure that the quality level is appropriate from the start,” Kimmo Salo, Sales Manager at PMC Hydraulics concludes.
